The families who use this website are often doing so at a tender time, and many are older or visiting from far away. We want the site to be straightforward and usable for all of them, whatever device or assistive technology they rely on.

What we aim for

This website is built to follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. In practice, that means we work to ensure:

  • every page can be navigated by keyboard alone;
  • text has sufficient colour contrast and can be enlarged without breaking the layout;
  • images carry meaningful descriptions, and decorative images are hidden from screen readers;
  • forms have clear labels and helpful error messages;
  • the page structure uses proper headings and landmarks so assistive technology can move through it sensibly.

The burial-record search

Particular care has been taken with the burial-record search, since it is the part of the site most people come for. It is fully operable by keyboard and screen reader, and each record page is laid out as plain, readable text.

Where we may fall short

Some content — older scanned documents in the resource library, for example, or an embedded map — may not yet be fully accessible. Where that is so, we aim to offer the same information in another form. If you reach something you cannot use, please tell us, and we will get the information to you another way.

Tell us

Accessibility is never finished, and the most useful reports come from the people who run into the problems. If any part of this site is difficult for you to use, we would genuinely like to know — contact us and we will do our best to put it right, and to fix it for the next person too.
